Videoconference Introduction

The South Island DHBs collaborated to replace ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) with IP (Internet Protocol) based videoconferencing at the beginning of 2006.  This upgrade provided a better quality service which enabled parties to communicate from different locations and still feel as if they were meeting in the same room.

There are now more than 30 sites in the South Island that are linked to The National TelePaediatric Service Network.  This network allows a simple, quick connection with any other sites on the network. The TelePaediatric Network has over 60 sites throughout New Zealand that have the ability to be linked through a videoconference.

Videoconferencing is rapidly growing as a fast and effective communication tool, especially within the rural areas that often feel isolated from the main centres.
